Formerly the Franz Josten Wine Cellar, now belonging to the Bogner family.
The Josten Wine Cellar, based in Neuss, was a leading wine producer and ran the cellar until the end of the nineteen seventies. Every autumn, grapes and must were purchased from local producers for processing here.
Beneath the Neo-Classical residence on the banks of the Mosel can be found a low-ceilinged barrel vault, which connects with two smaller vaults which intersect it on the upper side. One of these is located beneath the courtyard; the second extends under the adjacent working quarters. There the vault features a still functional crane hoist, with which wine barrels were lowered into or lifted out of the cellar prior to the introduction of modern pumps.
The cellar could accommodate around 100 tun casks. The wine was then transported by the barrel to Neuss, where it was filled in bottles, corked, labelled and sold.
