The Maxhof, as it is known today, was built in 1879 on the Traben bank by the current owner’s great grandfather. This enabled the wine to be transported by the barrel onto ships plying the Mosel - an activity which continued till around 1925.

The site was also conveniently close to the freight train station on the branch line built in 1883 from Traben to Pünderich which connected with the Trier to Koblenz line.

The cellar, which could take up to 80 tun casks and 20,000 wine bottles, consists of one main tunnel vault with four side sections.

A hoist was used to lower and raise barrels between the yard and the cellar for loading onto waiting vehicles.

In times of flooding the barrels were wedged against the vaulted ceiling of the cellar using wooden posts ("Absteiptechnik").

Modern cellarage techniques have also been adopted in this cellar. In addition to the many wooden barrels, there are also stainless steel tanks used for must fermentation and wine storage respectively.
